Applying for an Australian National Police Check?

The Australian National Police Check (ANPC) is a police record check that provides information on criminal offences and traffic offences. It's the most comprehensive type of police check available in Australia.

What is an Australian National Police check?

An Australian National Police check, also known as a National Criminal History Check (NHCT), is a search of your national criminal history and provides you with the results of any convictions or charges against your name. An example of the purpose of this check is to ensure that anyone working with children or vulnerable adults does not have any criminal convictions in their past.

How to apply

To apply for an Australian National Police Check, you will need to:

  • Complete the application (online or manual form)
  • Upload or print all required documents (as per instructions on the form).
  • Provide a valid email address where your results will be sent once they're ready.

Which documents do you need to provide

When applying for a National Police Check, you need to provide your name and date of birth. Additionally, you'll need to provide:

  • A (certified) copy of your passport (if applicable)
  • Fingerprint cards
  • Application form
  • 100 points of identification checklist + copies of the selected identification options

How works the 100 points of identification checklist?

The 100 points of identification checklist is a way to prove your identity. It's used in Australia and New Zealand. The Australian Federal Police and the Australian Passport Office use this checklist when issuing passports. Many government departments also use it as part of their processes for verifying your identity before they grant access to services such as Medicare or Centrelink (the government agency that provides financial support to Australians).

Police check with fingerprints

You can apply for a police check with fingerprints at any Australian police station or at an accredited fingerprint agency when you are located outside Australia. In Europe, for example, it is not possible to have your fingerprints taken at a police station, you have to visit an accredited fingerprint agency.

You will need to provide your fingerprints and they will be taken electronically in Australia or on hard copy fingerprint cards with ink when you are located outside Australia.
